William Whittaker’s “Disputation on Holy Scripture:” Dr. Whittaker outlines his approach whereas Bellarmine’s leading three rubrics: the church, apostolicity, and dual source of authority. Whittaker starts with Scripture. Jesus said in John 5.39: “Search the Scripture.” Whittaker proposes to obey that injunction and to diligently search the Scriptures that under Christ the Prophet, Priest and King as the Head of the Church. John Jewel’s “Apology for the Church of England:” the Preface to this volume engages Mr. Butler in his arguments for English Romanists. A discussion ensues on the appropriateness of the terms “Romanists,” “Papists” and “Popery.” If they wish to hang their hat on Petrine supremacy, let them own the distillated titles. ANF1—“Apostolic Fathers and Justin Martyr:” outlines the letters of Ignatius to Polycarp, the Romans, Philadelphians, and Smyrneans. Avoid the Docetists, stick with the Bishop, and avoid false teachers.
