Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): in “Permaculture for Ecotheology: An Innovative Experiment,” Troy Bierma blabs on without any significance for theology. He may think he is by doing science, but this is better placed in a science journal. Westminster Magazine (Spring 2022): “Tributes to Dr. Richard Gaffin,” Dr. Edgars continues his happy memories of Dick Gaffin from the 1960s. Modern Reformation (Jan/Feb 22), in “Fundamentals for the Evangelical Future,” Dr. Daniel Treier notes that creeds and confessions are essential for our times. Westminster Theological Journal (Nov 2021, 317-36): in “William Perkin’s Doctrines of Faith and Assurance Through the Lens of Modern Faculty Psychology,” Matthew Payne continues to expound on least-faith-to-mature-faith in Perkins’s soteriology. Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021, 7-34): in “Still No Peeking: Karl Barth’s Conflict with Federal Theology,” Dr. Beach notes Barth’s attempted victory by piling on impossible question aft

For Psalm 25, Prof. Calvin notes that David prays over his personal concerns but also prays for Israel, the Church. Zondervan Pictorial Bible: “Leviticus:” Prof. Harrison summarizes the Levitical outline. ISBE on “Levitical Cities:” 48 cities are identified on the map. The Levites were situated strategically so as to infiltrate the tribes as expositors of the Word. For Genesis 15.1ff: Prof. Keil comments on the deep sleep of Abram and the vision of the Divine Presence passing between the parted animals. For Judges 8.13ff., Prof. Keil notes that Gideon is offered the monarchy, but declines. For Isaiah 11.1ff., Prof. Henry introduces the Messianic passage, a glorious insert after the whip to Assyria’s back—done in holy indignation and just righteousness. For Mathew 9.13ff., Prof. Jamieson comments on Matthew’s call and Jesus’s dining with sinners and publicans. For Acts 1.6-11, Prof. Henry comments on the message of the two angels to the heaven-gazing Apostles. Frederick

Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): in “Permaculture for Ecotheology: An Innovative Experiment,” Troy Bierma wastes more time in a theological journal talking about “permaculture.” Surreal. Westminster Magazine (Spring 2022): in “A Legacy of Enduring Grace: An Appreciation of Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.,” Dr. Edgars describes Dr. Gaffin’s translation work in the 1960s of Geerhardus Vos’s works. Modern Reformation (Jan/Feb 22), in “Fundamentals for the Evangelical Future,” Dr. Daniel Treier discusses the need for creedal and confessional commitments. Sorta like yeah. We’re already there Daniel. Westminster Theological Journal (Nov 2021, 317-36): in “William Perkin’s Doctrines of Faith and Assurance Through the Lens of Modern Faculty Psychology,” Matthew Payne describes the beginner’s faith (“least faith”) as it matures to assurance. Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021, 7-34): in “Still No Peeking: Karl Barth’s Conflict with Federal Theology,” Dr. Beach gives us Barth’s a

For Psalm 25, Prof. Calvin notes that David strengthens and fortifies himself by prayer. One can discern in Calvin’s writings the frequent notes to duty and being strong. Zondervan Pictorial Bible: “Leviticus:” Prof. Harrison comments on the decadent Graffaholics. ISBE on “Levitical Cities:” notes that identifications today are difficult. For Genesis 15.1ff.: Prof. Keil begins an exposition of the covenant of grace with Abraham, a warrantable phrase, “covenant of grace.” For Judges 8.23ff., Prof. Keil comments on Gideon’s post-war responses to some tribalists’ envies. For Isaiah 11.1ff., Prof. Henry gives a summary of the Messianic sermon. ISBE on Johannine Theology, Prof. I. Howard Marshall is dealing with the title, “Son of Man,” in the Gospels, a reference to the Danielic “Son of Man” in Daniel 7. Glorious. For Mathew 9.1ff., Prof. Jamieson closed up Matthew 8—more miracles—by deferring them to the discussion in the Marcan parallels. For Romans 6.1-11, Prof. Hodge is

Zondervan Pictorial Bible: “Leviticus:” Hilariously, the author discusses the Graffaholic-Wellhausians. He does a nice job of burying them without an interment service nor a headstone. It’s funny to watch the dictators fall. For Genesis 14.1ff.: Prof. Keil discusses the lineage and background of Melchizedek. For Judges 8.13ff., Prof. Keil discusses the inter-tribal rivalries following Gideon’s successful combat operations. For Isaiah 10.20-23, Prof. Henry again focuses on the certainty of judgment coming to the proud Assyrians and King Sennacherib. ISBE on Johannine Theology, Prof. I. Howard Marshall comments on the Messianic secret, yet also Jesus’s affirmation of it. For Mathew 8.5-22, Prof. Jamieson draws his remarks to a close on the irresolute disciples. Count the cost. For Romans 6.1-11, Prof. Hodge correlates justification and sanctification with an eye to rebutting antimonianism. Or, as Dr. Gerstner would say, “Free from the law, O blessed condition; I can sin as I

Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): in “Permaculture for Ecotheology: An Innovative Experiment,” Troy Bierma offers nothing useful here. Don’t waste a minute on this article; you won’t get that precious minute back. Westminster Magazine (Spring 2022): in “A Legacy of Enduring Grace: An Appreciation of Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.,” Dr. Edgars reflects on the 60s and learning Greek from Dr. Gaffin. He comments on his “Acts and Paul” class (which he was teaching in 1979 and onwards we would add). Modern Reformation (Jan/Feb 22), in “Fundamentals for the Evangelical Future,” Dr. Daniel Treier outlines his resume: decadent Methodist church, to fundamentalist Baptist church, to evangelical seminary (Grace?) to a PhD from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Finally, he has settled in as a Professor at Wheaton, attracted to Anglican worship, but settling into a Presbyterian context. Westminster Theological Journal (Nov 2021, 317-36): in “William Perkin’s Doctrines of Faith and Assuranc

Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): in “Permaculture for Ecotheology: An Innovative Experiment,” Troy Bierma continues the unanchored and dislocated subject with more undefined bromides about virtue and eco-theology. Bierma has not put plates on the table nor given spoons, forks and knife. Westminster Magazine (Spring 2022): in “A Legacy of Enduring Grace: An Appreciation of Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.,” Scott Oliphant notes that a new picture of Dr. Gaffin has been hung in Machen Hall after 6 decades of teaching at WTS. Oliphant will later offer anecdotes on Dr. Gaffin, one from each decade. We would add that Dr. Gaffin prepared us well to handle the NT post-Kantians including the worm-infested Bultmann. Ooh boy! Was glad for Dr. Gaffin’s scholarship as a recipient of his learned exegesis and theology. Modern Reformation (Jan/Feb 22), in “Rethinking How We Think about the Evangelical Mind and the Local Church,” Dr. Charles Cotherman ends the article with a thud despite his raptur

For Psalm 25, Prof. Calvin notes how David confessed his sins granularly and cumulatively, not denying but affirming his “manifold sins and transgressions.” Think of the old 1662 BCP at MP, EP and HC. Not a version for the snowflakes and cupcakes, but strong stuff. Zondervan Pictorial Bible: “Leviticus:” comments on some decadent Graff-Wellhausians and their progeny dating Leviticus to 500-450 BC, willy nilly, with more Germanic diktats. ISBE on “Levitical Cities:” comments on the varied locations of these cities. For Genesis 14.1-12: Prof. Keil comments on the priesthood of Melchizedek and Abram’s tithe to him. For Judges 8.13ff., Prof. Keil comments on Gideon’s relationship with non-participatory tribes. For Isaiah 10.20-23, Prof. Henry comments on the preservation of the elect remnant. ISBE on Johannine Theology, Prof. I. Howard Marshall is addressing “Messiahship” in Israeli thought and in John’s Gospel. For Mathew 8.5-22, Prof. Jamieson is again commenting on half-he

For Psalm 25, Prof. Calvin notes that David was overwhelmed with inner anguishes, not just external dangers and enemies. Zondervan Pictorial Bible: “Leviticus:” we get the story of Wellhausianism. Why drag that dirty body from the grave? We’ve dealt with the Graffies elsewhere. For Genesis 14.1-12: Prof. Keil comments on Abram meeting Melchizidek upon return from his victory up north. For Judges 8.13ff., Prof. Keil is discussing the tribal rivalries after Gideon’s victory of the Midianites. Gideon is unamused by their jealousies. For Isaiah 10.20-23, Prof. Henry comments on the preservation of the elect, small in number though they be. They will survive. ISBE on Johannine Theology, Prof. I. Howard Marshall comments on “martyria” or “witness” in the Gospel For Mathew 8.5-22, Prof. Jamieson continues to discuss half-hearted discipleship, particularly after the ardors of enthusiasm have waned. For Romans 6.1-11, Prof. Hodge: the argument for antinomianism from JFBA is nipped
