IAWAKI, JAPAN: USS POGEY (SS-236) Drops Japanese Gunboat KEISHIN MARU http://www.navy.mil/search/display_history.asp 1811 - The American brig Spitfire is stopped by the British frigate Guerriere off Sandy Hook, N.Y., and the American seamen are taken aboard. On May 6, the frigate President, commanded by John Rodgers, was ordered to protect American shipping off Sandy Hook. 1822 - 60 men from USS Alligator, USS Grampus, and the chartered ship Jane, capture four pirate schooners near Sugar Key, West Indies. 1898 - The American squadron, commanded by Commodore George Dewey, defeats the Spanish squadron under the command of Rear Adm. Montojo at Manila Bay, Philippines. 1934 - Lt.
