In 1536, Calvin fled from France for Strasbourgh, a free city between France and Germany that had declared for Protestantism. Calvin, true to character, wanted a quiet life to read and study. En route, he had a stay-over in Geneva. Farel, who had been in Geneva already for three years, prevailed upon Calvin to stay in Geneva. Farel uttered curses upon Calvin should he refuse.
