Halsey Jr., leads the Wake Island Raid in an attempt to destroy the Japanese installations on the island. 1944 - PBY-5As (VP 63) employing Magnetic Anomaly Detection (MAD) gear, bomb and sink German submarine U 761 as she attempts to transit the Straits of Gibraltar. 1945 - USS Lagarto (SS 371) sinks Japanese submarine I 371 and freighter Tatsumomo Maru off Bungo Strait, Kyushu. 1959 - USS Galveston (CLG 3) fired the first Talos surface-to-air missile. 1995 - Fast Attack Submarine USS Toledo (SSN 769) is commissioned.
