One gets a look at engagements to keep Poland, Sweden and even England in the fold of Rome. Clement VIII hope for the conversion of Elizabeth 1 and even James 1, but, allegedly, "gets played" by James 1 with smooth talk. No mention is made by Dr. Ludwig Pastor about the Gunpowder Plot. On the whole, Dr. Pastor is laying out mountains of facts on Clement VIII in these two volumes, 23 and 24.

One gets a look at Clement VIII (1592-1605) as he deals with the French and Spanish conflicts and quests for dominance. Clement fears Spanish caesaro-papalism (Emperor over the Pope) and also fear the establishment of a French national, independent church like England. The Jesuits are involved in varied affairs including missions to the far east and the Americas.
