Dr. Ludwig Pastor’s “History of the Popes from the Close of the Middle A...


One gets a look at engagements to keep Poland, Sweden and even England in the fold of Rome. Clement VIII hope for the conversion of Elizabeth 1 and even James 1, but, allegedly, "gets played" by James 1 with smooth talk. No mention is made by Dr. Ludwig Pastor about the Gunpowder Plot. On the whole, Dr. Pastor is laying out mountains of facts on Clement VIII in these two volumes, 23 and 24.
