Theological Journals

Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): in “Permaculture for Ecotheology: An Innovative Experiment,” Troy Bierma offers nothing useful here. Don’t waste a minute on this article; you won’t get that precious minute back. Westminster Magazine (Spring 2022): in “A Legacy of Enduring Grace: An Appreciation of Richard B. Gaffin, Jr.,” Dr. Edgars reflects on the 60s and learning Greek from Dr. Gaffin. He comments on his “Acts and Paul” class (which he was teaching in 1979 and onwards we would add). Modern Reformation (Jan/Feb 22), in “Fundamentals for the Evangelical Future,” Dr. Daniel Treier outlines his resume: decadent Methodist church, to fundamentalist Baptist church, to evangelical seminary (Grace?) to a PhD from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Finally, he has settled in as a Professor at Wheaton, attracted to Anglican worship, but settling into a Presbyterian context. Westminster Theological Journal (Nov 2021, 317-36): in “William Perkin’s Doctrines of Faith and Assurance Through the Lens of Modern Faculty Psychology,” Matthew Payne introduces “conscience” the range of faculties of soul/mind. He also orients the reader to Perkins’s classical view on Augustinianism and original sin. Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021, 7-34): in “Still No Peeking: Karl Barth’s Conflict with Federal Theology,” Dr. Beach explains the pactum salutis without telling us a thing much about Barth’s view. Anglican & Episcopal History (Sept 2014): CHURCH REVIEW: Rev. Bates describes the architecture and five masses at the Roman Catholic Cathedral Basilica in Sante Fe, AZ. After an architectural review, we hear about the boys’ choir. (Often, fathers warn their boys about the priests when serving the altar guild…have heard that variously.) Churchman (Winter 2018): BOOK REVIEW: NT Wright’s “The Paul Debate:” John Percival offer general comments on Wrong’s theological including Wrong’s curt dismissal of penal, substitutionary atonement—“lacking both in semantic precision and exegetical precision and theological coherence.” Wrong has gone to the dogs and both the dogs and Wrong died. “SGT-of-the-Guard: get Wrong’s body outta here and bury ‘em out back. No ceremony will be conducted. That is all.” Global Anglican (Spring 2022), in “Preparing People for the Hardest Job of All,” Dr. Peter Jensen insists that theological Professors be pastoral and engaged with the public. Umm, that didn’t happen much. Protestant Reformed Theological Journal 55,1 (Fall, 2021): in “The Neo-Kuyperian Theology of Glory and Reformed Higher Education,” Brendan Looyeng gives some brief notes on Abraham Kuyper and common grace, the mechanism for political reformation (ugg!). The over-rated Dutchman. Reformed Theological Journal (Sept 2020), in “We Still Have Faces,” Dr. Glodo further comments on lifting up our face to God’s face and gaze upon us. Southwestern Theological Journal (Fall 2021), in “Reading the Torah as the Law of Faith,” Dr. Craig Keener further compares and contrasts ANE legal codes with the Mosaic legislation, including priestly and sacrificial ceremonies. “MASTER-at-Arm: Escort the Graffaholic to the exit. That will be all.” The Biblical Repertory/Princeton Review (Volume 9, Issue 1, 1837, pages 29ff.). James Waddel Archibald reviews “A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament, including the Biblical Chaldee. Translated from the Latin of William Gesenius, Doct. and Prof. of Theology in the University of Halle-Wittemberg. By Edward Robinson, D. D. late Prof. of Sae. Lit. in the Theol. Sem. Andover. Boston. 1836. pp. 1082. & vo. Rev. Waddel is not relaxing his smack-down of Gesenius. This is weirder than weird. It’s almost personal. Rev., ya’ might wanna apply the brakes some. Concordia Theological Journal (Winter 2020), in in “טומ Means ‘Collapse,’ Not ‘Be Shaken,” Dr. Paul Puffe is still puffing his point. Princeton Theological Review (Vol.22, No.1, Spring 2019), ), in “An Oppressed People in a Groaning Creation: Toward an Eco-Public Theology of Undocumented Farmworkers,” PTS student, Emily Wilkes, said something-or-other. Looking at the watch and then shaking it to make sure it works. Themelios (Dec 2021): in “Navigating Empathy,” Jonathan Worthington baffle-gabs on empathy. He even admits that his definitions are all over the place throughout the article. It’s sort like an Easter Egg Hunt. Not well-organized. TableTalk (April 2022), in “How Does God Administer the Covenant of Grace,” Dr. Ryan McGraw, Professor of Systematics at Greenville Presbyterian, brings the wrap on the standard presentation from the WLC.
