Theological Journals

Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): in “Permaculture for Ecotheology: An Innovative Experiment,” Troy Bierma continues to baffle-yap about virtue and environmentalism. Bye, bye Canonical Scriptures. Haven’t seen a text, exegesis, systematics or church history yet. Westminster Magazine (Spring 2022): “Alumni Updates and News:” offers some delightful anecdotes going back to a 1960s story. Wonderful. Modern Reformation (Jan/Feb 22), in “Rethinking How We Think about the Evangelical Mind and the Local Church,” Dr. Charles Cotherman is talking about the Fellows Initiative, 30 of them across the country, that tries to unite the church and the academy. This article is really, really, really missing a lot on this subject. The homework has, by no means, been done. Westminster Theological Journal (Nov 2021, 317-36): in “William Perkin’s Doctrines of Faith and Assurance Through the Lens of Modern Faculty Psychology,” Matthew Payne is still discussing variant views of Perkins’ coherence on the faculties of soul, mind, heart, will and affections. Payne argues there is a remarkable coherence internally despite Kendall’s assertions of incoherence and contradictions. Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021, 7-34): in “Still No Peeking: Karl Barth’s Conflict with Federal Theology,” Dr. Beach is still giving us Barth’s baffle-gabbings-n-yappings about the covenant of grace. We are not impressed with this article or assessment. Anglican & Episcopal History (Sept 2014), CHURCH REVIEW: All Saints Cathedral, Albany, NY. The reviewer comments on the 10-minute sermon with some jabs at the Dean. Churchman (Winter 2018): BOOK REVIEW: Paula Gooder and Michael Perham’s “Echoing the Word: the Bible in the Eucharist:” Michael Print, an evangelical Anglican, struggled for understanding of the Common Worship service coming from a “Ham Sandwich” evangelical church. This volume helped the young ordinand, now Presbyter, make sense of the CW options. He claims it’s must-have for collegians and postulants for orders. Global Anglican (Spring 2022), in “Preparing People for the Hardest Job of All,” Dr. Peter Jensen is again hammering home the utter importance of premier theological training. He will ask the why, when, where, and how as he progresses. Protestant Reformed Theological Journal 55,1 (Fall, 2021): in “The Neo-Kuyperian Theology of Glory and Reformed Higher Education,” Brendan Looyeng believes all Christian colleges, universities and seminaries, Reformed ones as well, are under a fast-changing and rapid assaults, e.g., the LBGT, etc. He promises to limit himself to the Reformed institutions, although he has a broader array in view. Reformed Theological Journal (Sept 2020), in “We Still Have Faces,” Dr. Glodo talks of the many passages that speak of “God’s face” shining on the “faces” of His people. No mask mandates there. Southwestern Theological Journal (Fall 2021), in “Reading the Torah as the Law of Faith,” Dr. Craig Keener comments on the Sabbath and special days in Paul’s mind. The Biblical Repertory/Princeton Review (Volume 9, Issue 1, 1837, pages 29ff.). James Waddel Archibald reviews “A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament, including the Biblical Chaldee. Translated from the Latin of William Gesenius, Doct. and Prof. of Theology in the University of Halle-Wittemberg. By Edward Robinson, D. D. late Prof. of Sae. Lit. in the Theol. Sem. Andover. Boston. 1836. pp. 1082. & vo. Prof. Alexander, while appreciating Gesenius, put him behind Kimchi and Buxtorf, the latter two built the watch and Gesenius is the hand that goes around the watch. Quite the statement. Concordia Theological Journal (Winter 2020), in in “טומ Means ‘Collapse,’ Not ‘Be Shaken,” Dr. Paul Puffe continues the pile-on to support his lexical recommendation to change the lexicons. Princeton Theological Review (Vol.22, No.1, Spring 2019), ), in “An Oppressed People in a Groaning Creation: Toward an Eco-Public Theology of Undocumented Farmworkers,” PTS student, Emily Wilkes continues her “immigration lecture.” Themelios (Dec 2021): in “Navigating Empathy,” Jonathan Worthington is repeating himself and getting us nowhere fast. TableTalk (April 2022), in “How Does God Administer the Covenant of Grace,” Dr. Ryan McGraw enlarges on WLC 33 and Christ, the Sum and Substance of the gracious covenant.
