Theological Journals

Westminster Magazine (Spring 2022): Dr. Pete Lillback offers an introduction to the four WTS Professors to follow writing articles on 1 Peter 2.13-25: “honor everyone,” “love the brotherhood,” “fear God,” and “honor the Emperor.” Various faculty updates and a commemorative article on Dr. Richard Gaffin are included. Modern Reformation (Jan/Feb 22), offers Franscisus Junius’ article on the “Providence of God.” Junius was born in 1545 and died in 1602. The article is scholastic and, at points, wonky. The WCF in chapter 5 still controls with precision and succintness. Westminster Theological Journal (Nov 2021, 275-297): “The Reformers and the Descendit Clause,” Rev. Joe Mock offers his conclusions of the several Reformers. Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021, 7-34): in “Verbal, Plenary Inspiration, and Bible Translation Method,” Mr. Josiah Walters is still complaining about “literal translation.” He sounds like he’s not done a lot of work in the original languages. Anglican & Episcopal History (Sept 2014), in “Ecclesiology of Prayer Book Illustrations,” Posey Krakowski concluded his review of the illustrations found in 4 BCP editions (1662 BCP) from the 18th-19th centuries. The illustrations are well-described, but he chokes on the 3-stool metaphor. Churchman (Winter 2018): in “The Role of Holiness in 1 Corinthians,” Alan Baird, an MDiv student at Ridley Online discusses the infiltration of socio-cultural values into the church at Corinth—pride, immorality, litigiousness, etc. Protestant Reformed Theological Journal 55,1 (Fall, 2021, pages 44-79): “’Committing the Truth to Faith Men’: Centennial History of the Protestant Reformed Theological Seminary,” Douglas Kuiper discusses the back-and-forth between the Consistory of First Protestant Reformed Church and the PRC Classis. Prof. Hoeksema, Pastor of First, and Professor at the PRC Seminary is exhausted and he’s seeking relief. Nearwise at the point of resignation. A good history of the school. Reformed Theological Journal (Sept 2021), in “Justification and Christian Life,” Michael Horton comments justification by faith alone as motivational and liberating, not needing attaboys for affirmation or self-absolution. Freedom to love one’s neighbor. Southwestern Theological Journal (Fall 2021), in “THE OLD TESTAMENT IN ACTS: A MACRO PERSPECTIVE,” Dr. Patrick Schreiner outlines the 3-fold structure of Acts. He’s searching for the OT predicate and may be reading a bit too much into it at some point. The Biblical Repertory/Princeton Review (Volume 9, Issue 1, 1837, pages 29ff.). James Waddel Archibald review Paul Henry’s “The Life of John Calvin, the Great Reformer” (Vol. 1, 1835). Rev. Archibald exquisitely comments on Calvin’s Institutes. Even foes have found it rich, thoughtful, scholarly and articulate. Concordia Theological Journal (Winter 2020), in “Confession of a Lutheran University,” Dr. David Loy hosts the question: does a Lutheran University need a public, confessional statement its professors, theological as well as across the other departments.
