Theological Journals, Part 3: 10/10/2022

Concordia Theological Journal (January 2022), in “Repentance for the Corinthian Community: 1 Clement’s Presentation of Christ in the Old Testament,” Rev. Daniel Broaddus deals with Clement’s exegesis of Isaiah 53, paralleling themes of Philippians, to wit, the humility of the Suffering Servant and the need for humility in the Corinthian dumpster fire. Themelios (Dec 2021): “Soteriology in the Gospel of John:” Dr. Bruce Reichenback of Augsburg University, Minneapolis, sketches Christ’s victories over sin, His opponents, the devil and death—parts of the soteriological whole. Themelios (2022): “The Pastor as Biblical Theologian:” Dr. Brian J. Tabb, Academic Dean of Bethlehem Seminary, Minneapolis, outlines the assured need for the Pastor to get and maintain his work in Greek and Hebrew. Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies (5.2: 2020): in "Surely a Catholic Church: The Orthodox Church as the Church," the Orthodox layman, John Mark Reynolds, continues to note the uncertainty of the knowledge of ecclesiastical boundaries, to wit, Christians may not be in an Orthodox Church, yet are Christians. No exegesis, no systematics, and no church history here. Reformed Presbyterian Theological Journal (1837): the Editor comments on the civil magistrates’ duties to uphold God’s laws. Well, the Senators and Congressmen in the US won’t take that too well. Southwestern Theological Journal (Fall 2021): BOOK REVIEW: Already Sanctified: A Theology of the Christian Life in Light of God’s Completed Work. By Don J. Payne. Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2020, 192pp., $22.99. The reviewer notes the wide miss by the author by omitting the Psalms. The Biblical Repertory/Princeton Review (January 1837). The Editors review “Melancthon’s Letters:” a letter to Spalatin asks for the Elector’s help is getting access to the Bishop’s library at Worms, a library of some note.
