Theological Journals, Part 1: 10/15/2022

William Whittaker’s “Disputation on Holy Scripture:” Dr. Whittaker finishes his work on the OT canon, shifts to the NT canon, wherein he notes no difference between Rome and the Reformed church, but does take notice of Luther on a few NT books. John Jewel’s “Apology for the Church of England:” the “Life of John Jewel:” Richard Hooker praises his patron and mentor that the Bishop was the worthiest divine of several hundred years. A list of Bishop Jewel’s works, sermons and letters are given. ANF1—“Apostolic Fathers and Justin Martyr:” outline of Irenaeus’s 4th book of “Against Heresies.” A few quick takeways: first, they are “senseless” who extol God’s mercy but take away His justice and, secondly, the OT is still instructive for reproofs, corrections and instructions in righteousness. Can anyone hear the allusion to Marcion? And, in our time, the giddy Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church, Mike Curry? On Irenaeus’s reading, Mike is “senseless.” But that’s so mean! And the tone too! Sit down, Mike, be quiet, and have the high honor of being instructed by Irenaeus.
