Theological Journals, Part 3: 10/5/2022
William Whittaker’s “Disputation on
Holy Scripture:” Dr. Whittaker is touring the history surrounding the
deutero-canonical books, recently proclaimed as a must by Trent, hosted by 50
Italian and Spanish Bishops, declaring anathema against those not affording the
deuteros full canonical authority. We have clarity of argument, energy of
style, and historic fullness from Dr. Whittaker. This may be the best book read
this year. As an aside, quite a set of heretics were are Bible-hatchet-men in
history besides Cerdon and Marcion. Can anyone say the 19th-20th
decadent Protestants? Modern Marcionites? ??. Clearly, the early apostolic and
post-apostolic writers “warned over and over” about false teachers and, yes,
including academicians.
John Jewel’s “Apology for the Church
of England:” the Preface to this volume is an engagement with some foolish
assertions by Mr. Butler, a Romanist, in his “Doctrine of the Roman Church.” It
takes Mr. Butler to the woodshed for some red-butt-hurt. This edition has a
lengthy preface followed by a “Life of Jewel” and, finally, Jewel’s “Apology.”
Such a rich heritage for Protestant and Reformed Prayer Book Churchmen.
ANF1—“Apostolic Fathers and Justin
Martyr:” a review and outline was afforded on the “Epistle of Barnabas.”
