Theological Journals, Part 1: 10/11/2022

William Whittaker’s “Disputation on Holy Scripture:” Dr. Whittaker continues to parse “canonical” and “apocryphal” works for the OT canon. He leans heavily on Jerome. John Jewel’s “Apology for the Church of England:” the “Life of Jewel” takes us through the production, publication, translation (into many languages) and the widespread approval of the “Apology of the Church of England.” Pope Pius 4 is having none of it and excommunicates Elizabeth and Jewel. Meanwhile, Dr. Harding and others at Louvain and Douay are bringing the plastic spoons to an artillery fight. The biography is succinct and sufficient as an overview. ANF1—“Apostolic Fathers and Justin Martyr:” the outline to Justin’s “Dialogue with Trypho” are outlined alongside some works to the Gentiles and some other fragments. We soldier on to Irenaeus and his “Against Heresies.”
