Theological Journals, Part 3: 10/15/2022
Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): in “Sign or Seal: Baptism in the Christian Reformed Church,” Dr. Ryan Faber confirms for us the presumptiveness of presumption regeneration, asserted by the GKN in 1905 and the CRC in 1906. It would gladden the heart of any literalist in the 1662 service of baptism and sadden the heart of Rev. Gorham of the CoE in 1850 and Bishop Cummins of the REC. But hey, the REC has Shifty and isn’t that cool, bro?
Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021): in “The Voice of One Crying: John Chrysostom the Preacher,” Dr. Gordon McMillan comments on some of the vitriol and harshness in Chrysostom’s sermons that ultimately had him exiled.
Hedgehog Review (Summer 2022): in Hedgehog Review (Summer 2022): in “The Tragedy of American Political Tradition,” Nick Burns is making no clear sense. He’s talking a lot about Hofstadter. ??
Global Anglican (Summer 2022): “Obedience and Submission in 1 Peter,” Dr. Lionel Windsor of Moore College begins by discussing the difficulty of the concepts in the 21st century in view of colonialism and patriarchy.
“The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 1: “Chapter 4: The Bible and Modern Criticism, Professor F. Bettex of Stuttgart concludes his article. What does higher ( = decadent) criticism leave us? Nothing. What assurance of salvation does it offer? None. Do we want these hypotheses on steroids? No. And so on. The conclusion is a clear-stated take-down of Graffies and that crew.
“The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 2:” in “Inspiration of the Bible—Definition, Extent and Proof,” Dr. James Gray (Moody Bible Institute and ordained minister in the Reformed Episcopal Church) deals with a few of Paul’s statements in Corinthians. “I speak as a man.”
“The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 4:” “THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD” BY DAVID JAMES BURRELL, D. D., L.L. D., Minister Of The Marble Collegiate Church, New York City, is not leaving any significant impression on the subject. Exegesis? None. Systematics? None. Church History? None. Direction? None noted.
New Horizons (October 2022): in “Meredith G. Kline: Controversial and Creation,” Dr. John Muether introduces Dr. Kline, his background, conversion, academic preparation and start at WTS in 1950. One student remembers him well.
“Theologians You Should Know: Apostolic Fathers to the 21st Century,” Dr. Michael Reeves discusses Athanasius on the Arians—they have a different God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit. It’s not just Christology.
Princeton Theological Review (Vol.22, No.1, Spring 2007): Life is in the Blood: Envisioning Atonement with regards to Levitical Theology Melanie Bair does strikingly well on the two goats in the Day of Atonement—the sacrificed one and the scapegoat. Even J.D.G. Dunn gets it right here.
