Theological Journals, Part 2: 10/19/2022

Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society (Mar 2022): in “Societally Derived or Studiously Prosecuted? God, Revelation, Education and David Payne:” Dr. Christopher Sarver notes the Bible-driven influences of John Brown’s commentaries on the Bible, including Brown’s comment that he taught himself Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. Bishop Brown (AME) designs to do the same. This much: Dr. Sarver has deconstructed the race-driven biography of Bishop Payne by a black, social activist. Benjamin Mays. To wit, Dr. Sarver is demonstrating a black theologian who has abused history and the facts. Anglican Theological Review (May 2022): in “An Anglican Ethic for a COVID-19 Pandemic,” Dr. Christopher Jones...this is completely worthless in a theological journal. Reformed hawks are circling. Throwing a tag “Anglican” on to it is hilarious. Anglican Theological Review (Aug 2022): “Editors Introduction:” this edition is dedicated to historical retrieval on Archbishop Tutu. We are not getting the theological to Tutu, but more about the author’s agenda. Not good history in our view. Trinity Journal (TEDS, Spring 2022): in “The De-Creation of Genesis 1 in the Trumpets of Revelation 8-9,” Dr. Craig Robinson...wonkdom and irrelevance. Anglican and Episcopal History (Aug 2022): in “Black Radicalism in the Episcopal Church: Absalom Jones and Slave Resistance, 1746-1818), Dr. D.A. Dunkley does a good job here, but notes that Jones didn’t have Latin and Greek, required for Episcopal ministers (in that day). Bishop William White still ordained Jones. Table Talk (September 2022): “Titus 2.11-14:” a detour is taken from the Exodus exposition with a discussion of antinomianism and legalism. Table Talk (Oct 2022): in “Exodus 26:” the tabernacle and its curtains were described. Table Talk (Nov 2022): in “Do We Have the Right Books of the Bible,” Dr. Mike Kruger discusses “self-authentication,” Calvin, Whittaker and Owens, but then turns to Tertullian, Tatian and Origen as he gets this going. Standard Bearer (October 1, 2022): in “What is Gender Dysphoria and its Common Expressions,” Prof. Greiss is discussing the culture of the day and the Christian response to it. Bibliotheca Sacra (Jan-Mar 2021): in “Table Briefing: Escaping the Prosperity Gospel and Recovering the Real Gospel,” Darrell Bock and Mike Rosario begin with the story of Costi Hinn, nephew of the mafia don Benny Hinn, and his departure from mafia Uncle and the lifestyle of mansions, servant, wealth and security. But, Costi broke the mafia code and went public. Modern Reformation (Sept/Oct 2022): in “Reading Genesis in the Reformation,” Wesley Winer comments further on various scientific schools that grounded themselves in Genesis 1. Historical description. Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): in “Sign or Seal: Baptism in the Christian Reformed Church,” Dr. Ryan Faber discusses the various Synods in 1969-1972 debating the liturgical language for baptism. The externalist view has made ground over the internalist view. Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021): in “The Voice of One Crying: John Chrysostom the Preacher,” Dr. Gordon McMillan concludes the article claiming Chrysostom still lives with us and his influences through the ages. ??. Hedgehog Review (Summer 2022): in Hedgehog Review (Summer 2022): in in “The Evangelical Question,” Kirsten Sanders claims evangelicalism is a contemporary social movement that adapts to the culture. ??. What is evangelicalism anyways?
