Theological Journals, Part 3: 10/6/2022

William Whittaker’s “Disputations on Holy Scripture:” clearly the best book read in the last few years, bar none. Dr. Whittaker shows the tangles-and-twists inside Romanism on the canon (and other canons they dismiss yet other they endorse). He cites Cardinal Cajetan to the witness stand for the OT canon following Jerome’s canon: the same as the Hebrew OT canon. But, Cajetan was scorned by other Romanist insiders, yet, Cajetan was chosen as the biggest gun to face off with Luther. Dr. Whittaker has command of the primary sources and works with logical skill and clarity. Tis’ a pity he doesn’t get more visibility. John Jewel’s “Apology for the Church of England:” the Preface to this volume was thus concluded, giving some butt-hurt to Mr. Butler, an Irish Romanist. That preface is finished. God willing, tomorrow, we begin a “Life of Bishop John Jewel of Salisbury.” ANF1—“Apostolic Fathers and Justin Martyr:” a tour of Papias’s fragments and Justin Martyr’s First and Second Apologies.
