Theological Journals, Part 3: 9/26/2022

Concordia Theological Journal (January 2022), in “Repentance for the Corinthian Community: 1 Clement’s Presentation of Christ in the Old Testament,” Rev. Daniel Broaddus makes a glorious start on 1 Clement, surveying the provenance and utility to Clement of Alexandria, Irenaeus and others. Timewise, somewhere in Clement’s reign of 80ish-90s, and dated about 96ish AD. ??. A glorious epistle. Protestant Reformed Theological Journal 55,1 (Fall, 2021): BOOK REVIEW: The Attributes of God: An Introduction, by Gerald Bray. Short Studies in Systematic Theology. Wheaton, IL: Crossway, 2021. Pp. 160. $15.99 (softcover). ISBN: 978-1433561177. [Reviewed by Marco Barone]. A simplistic book by Dr. Bray that does not impress Rev. Barone. Dr. Bray stepped on an IED and lost his legs with this one by putting a distinction between God’s essence and attributes, a quartium quid. Barone is not happy and cites Bavinck, Aquinas, Van Mastricht, Turreting and others. Ouch! We’re not buying Dr. Bray’s simplistic volume. Others are in the queue like Turretin. Not sure what prompted the Anglican historian to write this? Themelios (Dec 2021): “Soteriology in the Gospel of John:” Dr. Bruce Reichenback of Augsburg University, Minneapolis, sketches out resocialization (to God’s family), birth from above, and the “Lifted-Up One” (the snake lifted up in the Mosaic account). Clearly written and orthodox. Themelios (2022): “The Pastor as Biblical Theologian:” Dr. Brian J. Tabb, Academic Dean of Bethlehem Seminary, Minneapolis, begins the work of defining “Pastor” and “Biblical Theology.” Workable. Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies (5.2: 2020): Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies (5.2: 2020): in Surely a Catholic Church: The Orthodox Church as the Church John Mark Reynolds—overboard ya’ go. He’s saying little-to-nothing, as did Edward Escheverra in the last article. This appears to be under the hand of Dr. Peter Leithart? A conversation piece in the market square. A desirable conversation if clarity is on view. Reformed Presbyterian Theological Journal (1837): the Editor discusses the received report from the American Covenanters. One sees the desire for a national, established Church and comments on the duties of the civil magistrates to uphold Christ and His Word. Southwestern Theological Journal (Fall 2021): BOOK REVIEW: In Stone and Story: Early Christianity in the Roman World. By Bruce W. Longenecker. Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2020, 292pp., $34.99. The reviewer notes Longenecker’s skills on the issues of artifacts, Pompeii and Herculaneum.
