Table Talk (August 2022): Misunderstood Biblical Words: in “Breaking our Addiction to Gossip,” Rev. Sartelle notes that gossip and slander are put on a high level with grosser sins, adultery, etc., Romans 1.28-31. Table Talk (September 2022): “The Doctrine of Man as Covenant Breaker and Restored Image Bearer,” Dr. Rowland Ward offers the standard Reformed take on the subject. Useful review. Table Talk (Oct 2022): “Lost Virtue:” Dr. Piper comments on the lost virtue of honor and the fifth commandment. Standard Bearer: (July 2022): in “Sand Innumerable,” Mr. Mindehoud recounts the infinite and innumerable thoughts of peace God has for his people. Standard Bearer (August 2022): in “As in Heaven as in Earth (HC 124),” Rev. Kleyn discusses God’s will as eternal counsel and as prescriptions for human behavior. God’s prescriptive will is for our response and involves asking God to break our will to follow His. Let’s get Rev. Kleyn in the pulpit at Westminster Abbey,. Standard Bearer (September 2022): in “CRC Synod Report on Human Sexuality.” Rev. Decker makes his early foray into where the CRC is going on human sexuality. Bibliotheca Sacra (Jan-Mar 2021): in “A Chronology of the Life of Christ with Emphasis on the Nativity and Epiphany,” Kurt Simmons, J.D., puts the last week of Jesus in late March-early April 33 AD. Modern Reformation (July/Aug 2022): in “The Role of Creeds and Confessions in the Church,” Dr. Guy Richard notes the diversity of views and consensus approach even within the Westminster Assembly. Modern Reformation (Sept/Oct 2022): a translation of Herman Bavinck’s “The Christian Faith:” Bavinck waxes long on the deep, lasting, and effectual impressions wrought by the speaking and communicating Holy Spirit left on the convert by God’s Word, deeds and miracles. Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): “Theological Interpretation in Nigeran Prosperity Preachers:” Dr. Samuel Okanlewon notes that “heals” in 1 Peter 2.25 means effectual calling to follow the Shepherd. Westminster Theological Journal (Nov 2021, 355-381): BOOK REVIEW: Gabriele Boccacinni’s “Paul’s Three Paths of Salvation” (Eerdmans, 2020): the reviews places Boccacinni’s ideas to the left of the NPP-crowd. The reviewer enjoyed the book, but disagreed with it. Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021): in “Should Effectual Calling and Regeneration be Distinguished,” Dr. Cornelius Venema asks whether VanHoozer and Horton’s “speech act” proposals are Biblical, confessional or helpful.
