Theological Journals, Part 3: 9/20/22

Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021): in “Should Effectual Calling and Regeneration be Distinguished,” Dr. Cornelius Venema is long-talking Turretin. We got the point pages back, Professor. Move along. Looking again at Turretin’s 3-volume Elenctics for some relief here.

Global Anglican (Spring 2022): BOOK REVIEW: “A Theology of Disagreement” by Christopher Landau (SCM, 2021): the reviewer rightly faults Landau’s conflictions and confusions about alleged contradictions within the NT for a theology of disagreement. Even Jesus is conflicted and contradictory. The reviewer in not amused.

Global Anglican (Summer 2022): in the “Bishop of Your Souls: The Priestly Nature of the Church and its Leaders in 1 Peter,” Benjamin Sergeant begins to layout the larger case on church government.

Hedgehog Review (Summer 2022): in “A Usable Past for a Post-American Nation,” Dr. Johann Neem is startled by Trump’s claim to seek recovery of old American values, history and monuments. He proposes some new way forward as a “brown-skinned,” American immigrant and Professor of history in Oregon.

DTS (Summer 2022): “Rev. Chuck Swindoll on Preparing for the Ministry:” Rev. Swindoll refers to Paul’s mentorship of Timothy and the advice for the young man in his future ministry. We would add that this was Paul’s swan song late in life and from prison. Paul was prepping the young Elder.

“The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 1:” in “The Mosaic Authorship of the Pentateuch,” Professor George Frederick Wright, DD, LLD, dismantles the claim that Deuteronomy was a pious piece of well-intended fraudulence from the time of Josiah’s reforms. This is a Waffle House smackdown of the Graffie-Cultists.

“The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 2:” in “Inspiration of the Bible—Definition, Extent and Proof,” Dr. James Gray (Moody Bible Institute and ordained minister in the Reformed Episcopal Church) refers to the marks of divinity inherent to the Scripture itself—design, beauty, efficacy, unity and power of the text. Glorious to see an old REC man using the WCF to make his point.

“The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 3: “The Biblical Conception of Sin,” the Rev. Dr. Thomas Whitelaw of Kilmarnock, Scotland gives a review for the Bible witness to the afterlife.

“The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 4:” in “Modern Philosophy,” Attorney-at-Law, Philip Mauro discusses monism, pluralism and Dr. William James’s view as a Professor of Harvard. James notes that only the Roman Catholics hold to classical theism of creation and redemption while the Protestants do not—a witness to the empty guns with no bullets.
