Theological Journals, Part 3: 9/23/2022
Southwestern
Theological Journal (Fall 2021): BOOK REVIEW: The
Beauty of Preaching: God’s Glory in Christian Proclamation. By Michael Pasquarello
III. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2020, 254 pp., $26.99. Dr. Pasquarello is the
Methodist Chair of Divinity at Beeson Divinity School. The reviewer, a Baptist,
gives it a thumbs-up as positive, quasi-ecumenical, optimistic and a tool designed
for mainline homileticians. We’ll stick to Confession with the WCF in full, not
a rather therapeutic, happy-smiley approach. Will not buy this based on the
review.
The Biblical Repertory/Princeton
Review (January 1837). The Editors review
“Melancthon’s Letters:” gives a picture of Melancthon’s transition from intense
humanism towards theology under Luther’s influence.
William Whittaker’s “Disputation on
Holy Scripture:” a biography is given in the introduction. He was greatly
admired by Cardinal Bellarmine, the Jesuit, admiring the “heretic’s learning.”
John Jewel’s “Apology for the Church
of England:” the Preface to this volume laments the growing emergence of Rome’s
powers advancing politically in early 19th century England. Hence,
the need to discuss Rome and Canterbury in terms of Jewellian theology.
