Theological Journals, Part 3: 9/11/2022
Modern Reformation (Sept/Oct 2022): a translation of Herman Bavinck’s “The Christian Faith:” Bavinck waxes long about the depth of the Holy Spirit’s work in the believer. Vintage, Reformed, Heidelbergian doctrine and piety. A very piously worded, even emotional document.
Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): “Theological Interpretation in Nigeran Prosperity Preachers:” Dr. Samuel Okanlewon notes that “healing by His stripes” pertains to soul wounds, not physical illnesses.
Westminster Theological Journal (Nov 2021, 355-381): BOOK REVIEW: Gabriele Boccacinni’s “Paul’s Three Paths of Salvation” (Eerdmans, 2020): the reviews places Boccacinni’s three paths to salvation: merit-based righteousness of Torah Jews, merit-based righteousness of Gentiles living according to natural law, and Jews-Gentiles needing forgiveness through Christ. Ummm, Paul’s Romans rules the school, Dr. Boccacini. Dr. Boccacini is bold about this merit-worship. Who needs the Incarnation is one can simply resort to Law-works?
Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021): in “Should Effectual Calling and Regeneration be Distinguished,” Dr. Cornelius Venema could cut this article by about 40% while retaining the basic points. C’mon now, Prof., let’s wrap this up. VanHoozer and Horton have added nothing--zero--beyond Francis Turretin. Looking over at Turretin's 3-volume set on the shelf for some relief.
Global Anglican (Summer 2022): “LLF and Lambeth 2022:” Rev. Keith Sinclair, Director of the Church of England Evangelical Communion (CEEC) laments the lack of meaningful engagement on Resolution 1.10 of LC’s 1998. Will there be progress to heal the tear of the fabric in the Anglican communion? He fears not.
