Theological Journals, Part 2: 9/21/2022

Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021): in “Should Effectual Calling and Regeneration be Distinguished,” Dr. Cornelius Venema continues, repetitively, to expound Horton and Van Hoozer’s proposal of speech theory to explain the subject. We’ll stick with Turretin, thank you. Hedgehog Review (Summer 2022): in “A Usable Past for a Post-American Nation,” Dr. Johann Neem notes how a Post-American nation is calling for new myths for validation and a recasting of the past without the old myths. ??. DTS (Summer 2022): “Rev. Chuck Swindoll on Preparing for the Ministry:” Rev. Swindoll talks about being the light and salt of the world. A good reminder. “The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 1:” in “The Mosaic Authorship of the Pentateuch,” Professor George Frederick Wright, DD, LLD, continues the Waffle House smack-down of the moderate, decadent critics. He says the immoderate critics exist, but he’s dealing with the softer English and American renditions of the Graffie-Cultists. In this section, he guts the assertion that vast parts of the Pentateuch were written by Ezekiel and Ezra. A merciless but just take-down of the Germans. “The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 2:” in “Inspiration of the Bible—Definition, Extent and Proof,” Dr. James Gray (Moody Bible Institute and ordained minister in the Reformed Episcopal Church) tours the 2000 times of “Thus saith the LORD” while surveying the NT view of the OT. Glorious to see this old Reformed Episcopalian, trained at the old Seminary, retailing the historic, catholic, Biblical, and Reformed view of inspiration—a miracle of miracles and done by God with infinite ease. “The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 3: “The Biblical Conception of Sin,” the Rev. Dr. Thomas Whitelaw of Kilmarnock, Scotland handles the issue of annihilationism and Second Probation approaches to the afterlife. “The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 4:” in “Modern Philosophy,” Attorney-at-Law, Philip Mauro further comments on the current decadence in Protestant circles of 1909, citing Harvard's Professor, William James, and his contemporaneous confession of the same--theological rot. “Theologians You Should Know: Apostolic Fathers to the 21st Century,” Dr. Michael Reeves finishes his treatment of Justin Martyr and Irenaeus. Moving on to Athanasius and Contra Mundum. Princeton Theological Review (Vol.22, No.1, Spring 2007): “Theory and Metaphor in Calvin’s Doctrine of the Atonement,” Darren Sumner makes his beginning by long-talking about “metaphors.” Reformed hawks are circling. ??. Slipping in some quasi-Bultmannianism or Barthianism? We’re watching. Reformed Faith and Practice (May 2022): in “Geerhardus Vos and the Interpretation of Romans 1:3-4,” Dr. J. V. Fesko, Reformed Theological Seminary, Jackson, still is handling a Vos v. Warfield discussion on Rom.1.3-4. It involves a discussion of Son of God, Son of David and Son of Man. Dr. Fesko writes with clarity and insight, as usual.
