Theological Journals, Part 2: 9/2/2022

Modern Reformation (July/Aug 2022): in “Who Says? Solving Doctrinal Controversy,” Dr. Matthew Barrett finishes his jeremiad against evangelicals for lack of consistency and courage, yet, without naming anyone or offering footnote. Plug in the paper shredder. This should never have been put to press. Calvin Theological Journal (Spring 2022): “Theological Interpretation in Nigeran Prosperity Preachers:” Dr. Samuel Okanlewon offers commentators on 2 Cor. 8.9 that define Christ’s poverty as his humiliated state. Westminster Theological Journal (Nov 2021, 355-381): BOOK REVIEW: Dr. James Prothros’s “Both Judge and Justifier: Biblical Language and the Act of Justifying in Paul:” Dr. Briones notes that across the diverse set of view, justification is still forensic and is drawn from the courtroom. Have a seat, Bishop N.T. Wright, take the high pleasure of being instructed while you honor us by your silence. Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021): in “Should Effectual Calling and Regeneration be Distinguished,” Dr. Cornelius Venema is long-talking VanHoozer and Horton’s long-talking on the subject. Not impressed. Too long an article and VanHoozer/Horton are not solving anything beyond long-winding the subject. Global Anglican (Spring 2022): BOOK REVIEW: Michael Satlow’s “How the Bible Became Holy: Dr. Joel Briercrest faults the book the author, though a religion professor, for having never reading the OT or NT, cover to cover. How, pray tell, does that happen? Global Anglican (Summer 2022): “LLF and Lambeth 2022:” Rev. Keith Sinclair is still worrying about Lambeth 2022 and whether a new Province is in order for England. Not very helpful thus far. Hedgehog Review (Summer 2022): in “Abuses and Uses of History: Nietzsche’s Quarrel with History,” Dr. Jennifer Ratner-Rosenbagen (Un. of Wisconsin-Madison) contextualizes Nietzsche to the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian and the “historical baggage,” yeah, “stones” burdening Germany but not motivating to action. DTS (Summer 2022): “Interview with Dr. Scott Horrell:” the Professor at DTS retires after 25 years on faculty. “The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 1:” in “The Mosaic Authorship of the Pentateuch,” Professor George Frederick Wright, DD, LLD, performs an epic smackdown of the German Cultists’ failure to engage the scribal practices of the ANE world, precisely the argument used by Prof. Roland Harrison of Wycliffe, Un. of Toronto. “The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 2:” in “Inspiration of the Bible—Definition, Extent and Proof,” Dr. James Gray (Moody Bible Institute and ordained minister in the Reformed Episcopal Church): argues for the historicity of the history in the Canon, not factoring off history simply for the enshrining of religious content. Wonder if these mortals in decadent seminaries have engaged these issues? Or, whether they haplessly follow their windy deniers of Biblical inspiration?
