2. Cranmer's birth, education, and rise, 1-10. Strype notes that it is “a worthy work to revive his memory” (1). 1489. Family situation. Sent to Cambridge after his father’s death in 1501. At Cambridge, 1503. Gets his BA, MA, marries, and DD. Sets himself to study the Scripture. Cranmer refuses to go to Wolsey's new college, Oxford. He is made one of the university examiners. The king's great cause first is put before the universities. Cranmer wins over some disputants at Cambridge. The occasions his rise at court. The king sends for him and is lodged with Wiltshire. A friendship develops with the Boleyn family and correspondence starts the Earl and Cranmer. Strype notes well that “A providence in his being placed here.” Cranmer disputes at Cambridge.
