John Gough Nichols (ed.): "Narratives of the Days of the Reformation," 1...

The will of John Louthe is included. A letter from John Louthe, archdeacon of Nottingham Cathedral, pens an encouraging letter to John Foxe wishing him to continue his work and for its publication. He notes that Romanists cry, “Lies! Lies” And every line lies!” Louthe refers to an occasional mistake, but attributes it to the source, not the dishonesty of Foxe. The Recusant and Papist hatcheteers cry over a mistaken city or word missing the massive correctness of Foxe’s records. Louthe is a source for his friendship with John Philpott, a Marian martyr. Louthe is generous in his use of  “Antichrist” for the butcheries and cruelties of the “Antichristians” of Rome. Of course, he loves the work that Foxe is doing seeing it as enlightening and encouraging those in "Christ's Church."
