Diarmaid MacCulloch, Ph.D.: "Thomas Cranmer," Ch. 3--Campaign to end a m...
Grynaeus turns out to be an enzyme of catalytic effectiveness, coordinating Swiss and Strasbourgh leaders with “Cronmarus,” described by Grynaeus as “inside” Henry’s circle and the one responsible for any “public” information on Henry. In 1531, Grynaeus anticipates Cranmer’s 1532 trip to the Continent and Imperial Court. Cranmer comes to believe Grynaeus is an “evangelical loudmouth.” Robert Barnes is in the mix in terms of communications in 1531--between Wittenberg and Hampton Court. Luther and Melanchthon are thumbs down on the divorce and suggest bigamy to Henry’s horror—the same suggestion the Pope made in 1530. Bucer, Oecolampadius and Zwingli are brought into the issues.
