Charles Beard: "Martin Luther and the German Reformation," Ch. 5-Ninety-...

OCTOBER 1518--AUGSBURG. Cajetan: "Revoca!" Luther: "Nein!" Of note, Leo X in an Aug 1518 dispatch to Legate Cajetan (before the Oct meeting with Luther in Augsburg, has adjudged and deemed Luther an heretic). The intention of the Oct 1518 meeting is not for theological discussion: Cajetan's orders are to get Luther to repent. Hence, the Oct meeting has one goal: get Luther to recant and go silent. Luther did not know this in Oct but found out about it later. Onwards into late 1518, Luther appeals to a General Council, aware of those conflicts going back to Constance in 1414-1418, to wit, whose authority was ultimate? Pope or Council? Onwards into 1519, the die has been cast. Luther’s germinal principles remain fast and his convictions grow—one conviction: he will not get a fair hearing from Rome.
