Morning Prayer (1662 Book of Common Prayer)

ISAIAH-ALERT. LECTIONS. John Calvin on the Psalms. Keil & Delitzsch: Joshua. Matthew Henry: Isaiah. Jamieson, Fausset & Brown: Gospels. Matthew Henry: Revelation. Dr. Robert Reymond: Systematic Theology. Prof. Berkhof, Systematic Theology: Soteriology. Dr. Philip Schaff, Apostolic Christianity, Medieval Christianity and Swiss Reformation. Dr. Philip Schaff: Creeds. Westminster Shorter Catechism, 61-70. For Psalm 10, Prof. Calvin gives an excellent summary of Psalm 10, most necessary and helpful to God’s elect who see the fraud, extortion, cruelty, violence, greed, pride and more. Civil governments, we might add, are benefited by clear-eyed Christians who stand-up, speak and, if possible, exercise leadership. For Joshua 9, Prof. Keil camps on some Hebrew and Greek words about the clothing worn by the Gibeonites on the deceitful approach as ambassadors to Joshua’s government. For Isaiah 1, Prof. Henry we hear the evangelical summons to repentance and a new obedience.
For the Introduction to the Gospels, Prof. Jamiesson discusses Jerome and Epiphanius on the Hebrew edition, Matthew’s, of that Gospel. For Revelation 4, Prof. Henry emphasizes that this vision was a second vision. For Bibliology, Prof. Reymond dispatches with R.C. Sproul’s effort on infallibility, to wit, entertainment without a second act. Moving onwards, Confessionally, he proceeds. For Soteriology, Prof. Berkhof worthlessly jabbers (again and again) about common grace. For Apostolic Christianity, Mr. Schaff we hear more of the periods of church history: missions in 590ff, rise of Papacy to Innocent III (1049), decline of Papacy with Boniface VIII (1290), to the pre-reformatory movements until 1517. For Medieval Christianity, Mr. Schaff discusses Augustine’s work at Canterbury and his able work as a Bishop, noting that he was not the intellectual equal of his name-sake of Hippo. On our view, who is on Augustine’s view. God gives different gifts. For the Swiss Reformation, Mr. Schaff discusses Oecolampadius’s role Luther’s proud disaster at the 1529 Marburg Colloquy. For the Creeds, Mr. Schaff discusses Nestorianism, Apollinarianism, and Eutychianism. For the WCF, the sacraments and the foundation (Jesus) of their efficacy is discussed.
