Canon Richard Dixon: History of Church of England from the Abolition of ...

MASSIVE CANCEL CULTURE. CHISEL THOSE NAMES OFF THE MONUMENTS. The troubles of Sampson of Chichester: his weakness (140). Crumwel puts Sampson in the Tower and seizes his goods (141). Throughout 1539, a long, long list of various monastic establishments are shut down and plundered. This suppression stopped while the Parliament was in session, but started anew after Parliament has ended. (142). Dr. London, a Crumwellian agent, shuts down more than twenty houses. Notably, many nuns are more than happy to have freedom, get out of the enforced celibacy, and many will marry afterwards. But, the men, once released, are not allowed matrimony as per the Six Articles. AUTHORITY PROBLEMS PERSIST, E.G. ROYAL SOVEREIGNTY RATHER THAN THE BIBLE. Other Royal agents plunder and despoil establishments in Hampshire and Wiltshire (144). The story is told of Winchester’s sacking, allegedly, supported by Wily. St. Swithun’s shrine is sacked. To this day, the large space behind the altar is roped-off. The scene of much superstitions due to the ANTI-BIBLE MEN OF WYCLIFFE-SUPPRESSORS. Others repressed: Twynham Abbey, Amesbury, Malmesbury, Hales, Bury St. Edmund's and Durham. A fascinating story is told of the destruction of St.Cuthbert’s shrine (149). Gloriously, St. Cuthbert’s casked is opened, but not desecrated, but, thankfully, is honorably reinterred. The illuminated Gospels found in Cuthbert’s casket disappears due to “natural causes” (hint! hint! theft). It was found in Legh’s estate later. To wit, it was purloined. Layton dissolved St. Mary's, St. Leonard's in York, and many other houses (151). Shrines were destroyed everywhere (152). Rank-and-file: (1) radical destruction of Papal authority in England, (2) rank confiscation of church properties and incomes to the Royal treasury--Caesaropapism of the first order, and (3) the soft, ineffectual resistance by Churchmen like Cranmer and Latimer before the Royal pillage? They objected gently.
