Bishop Gilbert Burnet: Reformation of the Church of England: 3.1.84ff.

1513-1521. Burnet begins to trace the upwards trajectory of Wolsey, AKA Cardinal “French Pox” Syphilis. We hear of varied rectories, prebendaries, bishoprics and then York’s episcopal hat. Leo X is in this story of saints and scoundrels. He dies and Adrian is the Poop for over a year. Syphilis’s lusts for the Papal tiara and slippers was noted by all contemporaries around him and on the Continent. Henry pens and submits to the Poop his work on the sacrament-machine and gets the title “Defensor Fidei,” which pleased Harry to no end. Charles V, Clement 7, Francis and Henry are the chief political actors on stage. Of note, Syphilis has quite a money-machine running.
