Canon Richard Dixon: History of Church of England from the Abolition of ...

1549. Pole from Italy writes to Warwick and to Somerset sounding the alarm that France and Spain might be potent allies given England’s secession from Rome. He recalls that Charles V has a long memory about his Aunt Kate. Pole floats the idea of Rome from Rome sending Pole to England as legate, a measure of mollification (126-128).

SEPTEMBER 1549. FLUSH OUT THE DEVIL. CANNIBALISM. AN EPISCOPAL, BREAD-WORSHIPPING MACHIAVELLIAN FLUSHED OUT. THE PHONY MASK IS OFF. "BLOODY BISHOP BONNER" EXPOSED.

Meanwhile, Bishop Bonner of London is brought under suspicions that he allows customary “Masses” (with all the unsavory doctrinal associations and the devil’s juggleries) to be celebrated under the name of “Communion.” What’s in a name change if all the other indecencies are allowed? So, the Council ordered Bonner to preach a pre-crafted, prescribed sermon at Paul's Cross while personally remaining under house arrest. He is taciturn throughout, but he is a skilled Machiavellian, maintaining a prudence of silence. Bonner preaches the prescribed sermon but is denounced for omitting and adjusting sections. Witnesses are deposed. He is formally “denounced” by Bishop Hooper and William Latimer. A Commission of inquiry is ordered up at Lambeth Palace (132). Bonner’s fake mask comes off and his insolence is noted by all. Simon Micronius, Hooper's  friend, Superintendent of the Dutch Church noted.  “He (Bonner) behaved with  so  much  effrontery and stubbornness (for I was present and saw everything that took place) that you would rather call him a buffoon than a bishop” (136). Cranmer and Bonner skunk each other with Cranmer being more dignified. Second sitting of the Commission: Bonner and Sir Thomas Smith have a rousing tete-a-tete. Bonner and Cranmer: the gloves are off. Again, Cannibalism is put forward. The third sitting, 16 Sept 1549, Bonner and the accusers: violent altercations. Fourth sitting: the Commission enlarged: violent altercations again (134). In the disputes, Bonner, like Tractarian Crusaders and like ACNA/REC's Tractarian Tilters, turns to his idol of Cannibalism and Bread-Worship. A fifth sitting--more violent altercations with Bonner appealing to the King.
