Theological Journals, Part 1: 12/13/2022: Whittaker, Jewel, 1 Clement

William Whittaker’s “Disputation on Holy Scripture:” Dr. Whittaker continues his reconnaissance tour through the Bible. Having finished with the OT, generally, and then Psalms, he turns his textual analysis to the NT--the Vulgate, corrupted streamlets and the NT Greek, picking away at Bellarmine’s efforts to defend dubious texts. Dr. Whittaker is working the original languages like a Bible specialist, like Professors Hodge, Green, Shedd, Wilson, Allis, Machen, Murray and others in that revered, scholarly lineage. Dad was very correct to insist on maintaining the ”Old Princetonianism.” John Jewel’s “Apology for the Church of England:” Jewel continues to insist on the Primacy of the Word above Word + Traditions as co-equal sources of authority. Jewel brings in patristic authors for collateral fire support. “Ante-Nicene Fathers down to 325 AD: the First Epistle of Clement is finished—the epistle-bearers are commended to the divisive Corinthians, exhortations to humility appear up to the closing, and is capped off with a beautiful doxology reminiscent of Dr. Cranmer’s BCP.
