William Whittaker’s “Disputation on Holy Scripture:” Dr. Whittaker continues to enumerate and elucidate the infelicitous, sometimes inaccurate, and unfortunate translations in the Vulgate editions. Bellarmine tries to excuse such in deference to the Council of Trent, but even some Romanist exegetes, e.g. Erasmus, Cajetan and others, agree with Dr. Whittaker. Dr. Whittaker proposes to tour Genesis, having finished with 15 instances where the Vulgate does not accord with the Hebrew. Is Dr. Whittaker overstating the case? Regrettably, one never hears the things Dr. Whittaker proposes. These men ACTUALLY believed in the authority of the original texts. They really did. And rather than using the Latin Vulgate, the Bible specialists today use Hebrew and Greek. John Jewel’s “Apology for the Church of England:” Jewel takes a tour and run through the excesses and arrogances of Popes through history. Arrogance, usurpation of power, and murderousness in some instances. We could add the Wars of Religion in France for the early modern period. People today are not taught about Papal arrogance. They have a “nicer” face since the advent of modern media, but, when unchecked, they could be ruthless. But, the Princes and Monarchs knew what they were dealing with in the 15th century with Conciliar efforts to reform the Renaissance Papacy. Adrian VI knew Rome was corrupted and needed “root and branch” reforms. And where are we today with decadent Protestants? Even European Romanism has serious issues. ??. So here we are in 2022. “Ante-Nicene Fathers down to 325 AD: Clement 1 continues the exhortations and illustrations of Biblical faith, fidelity and humility. Hint, hint, you proud fellas and schismatics in Corinth, listen up.
