1553, CHAPTER IV. A bit of mercy is shown. You foreigners and false teachers can get out of England. At first Dr. Vermigli was told no more teaching in Oxford. Next, never leave Oxford. Somehow, he gets to London and petitions the Council so that he can leave merry ole England. Peter Martyr departs. John a Lasko leaves also. So do about 800 Englishmen depart—to Frankfurt, Emden, Marburg, Strasbrug, Basel, Arou, Zurich, Geneva, and other places. Dr. Cranmer is in jail by Sept 1553 with other English Reformers. We do not have a date for Mrs. Cranmer and the children’s departure, or, even Ed Cranmer, Canterbury’s Archdeacon. Peter Martyr departs.  Even with a government pass, Papist malice abounded towards Martyr and he scoped out plans to avoid the English Papists. On this malice, it extended to Dr. Cranmer to Dr. Vermigli’s astonishment who says of Cranmer: “That he could not have thought there were any in the world, unless he had found it, that with such crafty wiles, deceitful tricks, and bitter slanders, would rage so against a man that deserved no manner of evil of them, nor ever hurt any one of them either in word or deed. And yet they tore his name with most shameless lies; and would never make an end” (54).  Can anyone spell Nickie Harpsfield as one of the champions of brutal malice? Or, Gardiner? As an aside, in Mary’s first year, a rumor is floated that Queen Mary 1 is with child by Bishop Wily Gardiner—it’s investigated but no one is indicted—A told B who told C who told D ad infinitum sine finem. Mary has great regard for Wily.  A Parliament is called and “stacked,” sending properly elected PMs packing with orders to reselect candidates to do Mary’s will. The Parliament repeals queen Katherine's divorce under Gardiner’s sponsorship; Gardiner pins it on Cranmer in the Act yet, most ironically, Gardiner was on the annulment team before Cranmer, was in Rome for annulment business, and was party to the Dunstable annulment arrangement. Gardiner was in the issue deeper than Cranmer, but Wily self-absolved himself and threw Cranmer under the bus. 50-61.
