John Foxe: "Acts and Monuments," 3:26ff.
1382. Reign of Richard II. WYCLIFFIANISM ENDS RIGHT HERE AND RIGHT NOW. The “Monition” of Archbishop Courtney to the Chancellor of Oxford. We would add, moneo/monere suggests “warning” and even “threatening.” In other words, no more Wycliffianism at Oxford. A lengthy and long-winded examination of Nicholas Herford, Philip Reppington, and John Ashton is put forward. Cited before the ABC at Lambeth, a meek and tepid protestation is made by Herford, Reppington, and Ashton (28). Further examinations are ordered up against Herford, Reppington and Ashton (29). Courtney’s doctors of divinity give the thumbs down on the defendants, but 8 days is given to the defendants to reconsider. Archbishop Courtney beings the proceedings against John Ashton (31). The Wycliffian stuff is gonna end on my watch.
