Afternoon Prayer

For Revelation 15.5-8, Prof. Henry notes these angels with the seven vials are not coming with peace but for war with the anti-Christian forces.

For EDT, higher criticism: Prof. Harrison notes the important of examining genres in the propinquity of Biblical books, e.g. Graeco-Romans and epistolary practices and Paul’s letters or legal enactments in Moses’ times (the period of non-writing as the Graffies puff, never mind the Hammurabi Code).

In the Global Anglican, Mr. Payne claims that perseverance of the saints was not inherent to all Reformed predestinarians.

For Systematic Theology (locus 2), Prof. Hodge puts Montanism and Mysticism together—we’d add Romanism and charismatics to that equation. Pondering connective points.

For Theology Proper (locus 2), Prof. Reymond hits another homerun on the “Son of God” passages.

For Ecclesiology (locus 6), Prof. Berkhof discusses church government of Quakers and independents as well as Episcopalians.

For ODCC, Clement of Rome: discusses the Clement of Rome as the author of the correspondence from Rome to the rebels at Corinth. A nice few comments.

For Apostolic Christianity, Vol. 1 (0-100) Prof. Schaff gives a good review of Jesus’s Messianic status, but also His humility.

For Medieval Christianity, Vol. 4 (590-1073), Prof. Schaff comments on the organization of the Koran—identifying early, middle and later periods of Mohammed’s life.

For the Swiss Reformation Vol. 8 (1519-1605), Prof. Schaff falls of the wagon again on Calvin’s severity. Gonna paint Schaff some red-butt hurt if he doesn’t stop the defamation.

For the Creeds of Christendom, Prof. Schaff is defanging the claim to infallibility.

1994 CCC: offer unobjectionable comments on the role of creeds for churches.

Westminster Larger Catechism 133:

Q. 133. What is the reason annexed to the fifth commandment, the more to enforce it?
A. The reason annexed to the fifth commandment, in these words, That thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, is an express promise of long life and prosperity, as far as it shall serve for God's glory and their own good, to all such as keep this commandment.
