Morning Prayer and the Litany (1662 Book of Common Prayer)

LECTIONS. John Calvin on the Psalms. Keil & Delitzsch on Joshua. Matthew Henry on Revelation. Dr. Robert Reymond on Systematic Theology. Dr. Philip Schaff on the Swiss Reformation, namely, Ulrich Zwingli. Westminster Shorter Catechism, 91-100. Prof. Calvin explores Psalm 7.3-5 with David exculpating himself from malice towards his enemies, although Cush's malice is widespread inside Saul's circle. For the 21st century human, we learn solid patterns of prayer, including imprecation of Satan, the world and the flesh. We are fighters and are not suing for peace with the City of Man. God save the elect and damn the reprobate. As for judgments, in this life and the next, God's judgments are never tardy or late--He runs His own schedule and it's His, not our's. For the elect believer, he or she has looked at Christ's Cross, Death, Resurrection and Ascension--judgment, propitiation and expiation of sins has been rendered and Christ's prefect righteousness has been "accounted" and "imputed" to them. As such, they hold their heads high not in pride, but in the confidence of their Sovereign Saviour. Prof. Keil continues to linger and explore the circumcision and Paschal observance, once having crossed the Jericho (Joshua 5). Prof. Keil might be termed an "Evangelical Lutheran" taxonomically and in its historic sense as over against those rebelling against Confessional strictures, e.g. Ewald and Eichorn. Prof. Matthew Henry begins his elucidation on the Pergamos church by focusing on the two-edged sword that flashes from the Sovereign Mouth of the Refulgent, Risen, and Reigning Redeemer--Jesus' mouth, words and sword cuts knots, lances boils and wounds, cuts down enemies, and is offensive and defensive. Christ's efficaceous Word and Words, grammar and all (sorry Barth) sobers, rebukes, and comforts. John's Christocentricity and omnicompetence is manifest. Prof. Reymond continues Prof. Warfield's long knee-capping and head-butting of those objecting to God's incapacities of revealing His Word and Words through human instruments. The sentences are long by Prof. Warfield, but his sharp sword is wielded very well against the offenses of God-defamers. Prof. Schaff continues to show Zwingli and Zurich's responses to the Anabaptists, a day of Caesaro-papacy when the State-Church punished theological deviances. Anabaptists were ill-treated including bodily punishments and deaths. The Westminster Shorter Catechism covers the two sacraments of the New Testament, their efficacy to the elect, and introduces the Lord's Prayer.
