Morning Prayer (1662 Book of Common Prayer)

LECTIONS. John Calvin on the Psalms. Keil & Delitzsch on Joshua. Matthew Henry on Jude. Dr. Robert Reymond on Systematic Theology. Dr. Philip Schaff on the Swiss Reformation, namely, Ulrich Zwingli. Westminster Shorter Catechism, 51-60. Prof. Calvin begins his work on Psalm 5.4-6. This should inform the prayer life. One thinks of the goodly Commination Service in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. However, the beta-boys and snowflakes of modernity take to bed-wetting when Psalms like these are addressed. UPSHOT: (1) Observe the bed-wetters who belittle God's justice and holiness. (2) Realize these bed-wetters must, of logical necessity, attempt the erasure of and pogram against penal, substitutionary atonement. Psalm 5.4-6: "4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee. 5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity. 6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man." Prof. Keil continues to detail the miracle of God's omnipotent restraint of the Jordan River as the Israelites prepare to cross the river. Prof. Keil arightly and justly notes that God is punishing the pagan Canaanites as Adamites unjustified by the Redeemer. This helps to cure the termites of Marcionism that have overtaken churches. This smacks down Schleiermachianism and Process Theology among others. It had serious implications for other doctrines: God's attributes, original sin, justification, ecclesiology and eschatology, subjects that hover above the beta-boys-and-girls in modern seminaries. To wit, God in his Omnipotent, Holy, and Just Omnipresence is EVER-JUDGING. Either by Christ's imputed merits to the elect or judgments of the reprobates based on their own vast minefield of demerits. Prof. Matthew Henry brings us to the opening of the regal, stunning, and overwhelming revelation (from God using words) of Jesus Christ in His risen, resplendent and effulgent glory. UPSHOT: (1) Retain this in memory daily and, especially, for Morning and Evening Prayer. (2) Head lowered in prayer and humbling before His august Majesty, the Alpha and the Omega. Prof. Reymond expatiated on written, verbal, and perspicuous revelation by God to Habakkuk regarding the assured conquest of the Kingdom of Judah. Furthermore, the message was directed to be transmitted to others. UPSHOT: (1) God uses human words to give perspicuous revelation. (2) This, among other texts, is an effective chin-smashing, nose-smashing, jaw-smashing, and teeth-smashing rebuttal of Mr. Karl "I'm smarter than God" Barth who used 6 million German words to tell us God doesn't talk to humanity with words. Prof. Schaff laid the groundwork for the public disputation in 1523 of Zwinglil's 67 Propositions, a clear statement of the Reformed faith to that date. UPSHOT: as clergy, especially, one ought to be ready to assert and defend the articles of the faith. Compare that to one's TEC Bishop who stated, "I don't talk theology." The WSC 51-60 deals with the Ten Commandments.
