Evening Prayer (1662 Book of Common Prayer)

LECTIONS. John Calvin on the Psalms. Keil & Delitzsch on Joshua. Matthew Henry on Revelation. Dr. Robert Reymond on Systematic Theology. Dr. Philip Schaff on the Swiss Reformation, namely, Ulrich Zwingli. Westminster Shorter Catechism, 91-100. Calvin expounds Psalm 5.10, pleading for God to do a take-down of His enemies. 5.10: "10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee." This scribe has never, ever heard a prayer or petition to this effect and he forswears and abhors that utter inadequacy of his forefathers, his theological professors and his own failures in this respect. UPSHOT: WE NEED TO PRAY THAT GOD DESTROYS EVIL PEOPLE. Prof. Keil continues the discussion of the Jericho crossing, Joshua 4.1ff. On Rev. 2.1-9 with Prof. Matthew Henry, we are reminded and learn afresh of Jesus Christ holding ministers and the churches in His own hand. A notable point is made: He walks amongst the Churches. So much for Swifty Shifty of Dallas in his non-stop blab-a-thon about "Real Absence." Au contraire, Shifty (long story there). Also, the Ephesians hate the works of the Nicolaites, which I [Jesus Christ] also hate." Prof. Reymond exegetes 1 Cor. 2.6-13 and notes that Paul claims to speak God's messages, words and grammar. Prof. Schaff deals with a third disputation at Zurich, Jan 1524. Iconoclasm is outlawed. Zwingli preaches about false shepherds: non-preaching bishops, selfish hirelings, preachers of their own dreams rather than God's Word, and those glorifying Popery. "Papists are refined idolaters." The WSC in this section deals with the sacraments and the beginning of the LORD's Prayer.
