Morning Prayer (1662 Book of Common Prayer)

LECTIONS. John Calvin on the Psalms. Keil & Delitzsch on Joshua. Jamieson, Fausset & Brown on the Gospels. Matthew Henry on Revelation. Dr. Robert Reymond on Systematic Theology. Dr. Philip Schaff on the Swiss Reformation, namely, Ulrich Zwingli. Westminster Shorter Catechism, 51-60.

Prof. Calvin rightly and enlighteningly elaborates on how infants themselves on the mothers' breasts, or 7-year olds, or 10-years old (as in Christ's triumphal entry), sufficiently evince and show forth God's sovereignty and glory. The Lads and Lasses themselves show forth spectacular providences, e.g. a baby looking for food from Mother. That talks. The baby has its DNA to do that and so does the Mother. All this (and more) smacks down the proud enemies of God. And a smack down is exactly what David is indicating. While we all are called to humility and some have lower academic stations in life, those in lower stations, even infants, silence the foes of God. Hence, from infants to middle-schoolers, to graduate students, to middle-aged folks to the elderly, the City of God "silences and avenges" God's enemies. Wonderful exposition by Prof. Calvin. Marcionites, read closely and repent of your defamations of God's justice, righteousness and holiness.

Prof. Keil comments on the preservation of Rahab and her extended family as the Israelites put the city to the torch. For the Marcionites, repent of your hatred of God's justice, holiness and righteousness.

Prof. Jamieson outlines Eusebius' notes from Ecclesiastical History on the canonical books of the NT. Of interest, he sweeps away the sceptics and defamers of God. Wonderful to revisit this review of Eusebius' notable History, a must-read for young Christians. And reviews too by us old fellas.

Prof. Henry in Revelation 3, begins the letter on Sardis. Rightly and reorientingly, by Divine design, the Person and attributes of the Risen Lord, have the first part of the letter (like the earlier letters). Sardis, brace for some heavy rolls.

Prof. Reymond finishes his chapter on the "inspiredness of Scripture." Do not look for this level of clarity from ACNA Bishops, theologically. Charitably, we must be gentle with weaker brothers, e.g. Bishops.

Prof. Schaff deals with the incarceration of Anabaptists at Zurich. The magistracy controlled the events, but given very close partnership with the church, the church had a role in the persecutions of the Anabaptists. The Reformers inherited Erastianism. The Erastians learned their political lessons from the Man of Sin in Rome claiming Petrine supremacy over the church and the state.
