Morning Prayer and the Litany (1662 Book of Common Prayer)

LECTIONS. John Calvin on the Psalms. Keil & Delitzsch on Joshua. Matthew Henry on Jude. Dr. Robert Reymond on Systematic Theology. Dr. Philip Schaff on the Swiss Reformation, namely, Ulrich Zwingli. Westminster Shorter Catechism, 71-80. As for Psalm 5, Prof. Calvin addresses David's prayer for a pushback and beatdown against the godless puffers and repressors of divine revelation. David desires to see them crushed by the Divine Hand of holiness and justice. Upon seeing such, he shall appear before the LORD to give praise. Such a prayer should shape our daily prayers at Morning and Evening Prayer. On Joshua 3.7-17, after the justified beat-down of Prof. Eichorn of Germany, Prof. Keil spends time on the geographic details of the Jordan River from the north to the south and as affected by the seasons of rain and snow-melts of Mt. Hermon, etc. Prof. Matthew Henry comments--tersely and somewhat helpfully--on the vision of the Risen, Refulgent Christ with white, hoary and ageless hair, the sword from His all-conquering mouth, the breastplate with the elect upon His chest, and his brassy feet, crushing Satan's kingdom to dust, etc. It's a mouth-stopping vision. Prof. Reymond comments on Jeremiah 36 in furtherance of God's ipsisima Verba. Write it down the prophets were told, from Moses onwards. You won't hear that from Episcopal Bishops other than "This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God." They'll claim such, but deny it elsewhere. Prof. Schaff reviewed the attendees at the disputation on 29 Jan 1523 in Zurich, debating Zwingli's 67 propositions. 600 people attend. Vadian, Sebastian Meyer, Sebastian Hoffmeister and Dr. Faber attend. Oecolampadius does not attend this debate, thinking it will be unproductive. However, in the future, Oecolampadius will attend a debate three years later in 1526. Notice how far advanced Switzerland is by comparison to England.
