INTERVIEW: Rev. Grahame Wray (Free Church of England--Evangelical Connex...
Rev. Grahame Wray of the Free Church
of England—Evangelical Connexion tells of his story from youth to adulthood in CESA
(Church of England in South Africa), a Reformed and Evangelical body. He grew
up Anglican and was an old Prayer Book Churchman. He details his return with
family to England and entrance into the Free Church of England. Stunningly, Rev.
Wray drew preliminary attention to Mr. Fenwicks’ back-ground—as an ecumenical
advisor to Canterbury until becoming the Primate of the FCE. During the
examination for reception from the CoE to the FCE, Mr. Fenwick was asked Bishop
Arthur-Bentley Taylor about “sola scriptura,” a Cranmerian, Reformed, and Protestant
commitment. Mr. Fenwick, apparently, holds the tricycle view of Scripture,
reason and tradition. ??. We’d like confirm that by deposing Mr. Fenwick. We
wish we had subpoena power, but we do not. Mr. Fenwick abruptly ended the
interview with Bishop Arthur-Bentley Taylor and stormed out. The story passed
into the repertoire of the FCE-EC. Somehow, Mr. Fenwick, an entryist to the FCE
and infiltrator with an agenda, became the FCE’s Primate. We need to unpack
that further. Another stunning story is of Mr. Fenwick, imposing a Polish Catholic
liturgy instead of the FCE’s Book of Common Prayer. The minister refused that
imposition and Fenwick withdrew the man’s license. We came in with 16 questions
and barely got through question 1. Thus far in the story, we are appalled by these
two accounts. Perhaps we can interview Mr. Fenwick. One is reminded of Eusebius’s
account of how Bishops’ meetings are full of contentions, not exactly a good
point for our children and grandchildren to witness or heart about. Rev. Wray
has agreed to further exchanges, especially in the hopes of helping younger men
and women.
