John Foxe: "Acts and Monuments" (1556), Vol. 8, p. 31


1556. Foxe curiously and inexplicable backtracks to a 1544 letter of defense by Ralph Morice to Sir William Buts, Henry VIII’s physician, and Sir Anthony Denney. Morice defends Rev. Richard Turner of Chatham, Kent, against the Kentish Anglo-Romanist priests including the prebendaries of Canterbury Cathedral, 31ff. Morice notes that Turner has preached-up Henrician supremacy and preached-down purgatory, pilgrimages, mass-mongery and more. He’s been widely hailed and accepted broadly, to the chagrin of the Kentish JPs and Romanists. The said Rev. Turner has learned some doctrine in his Continental travels. He’s called to Lambeth a few times and released. But Wily Winchester’s gets over his skiis (again) and gets Turner recalled to London based on the 1539 Six Articles. But Dr. Buts, the physician, chats-up Henry and, liking the supremacy angle and its effect on Kentish auditors, lets Turner return to his Chatham parish and wide auditory. Foxe curiously fast-forwards from the 1544 letter to the 1550-1551 Cranmer-Wily literary row on the Eucharist. Foxe summarizes it this way: “…that at last he [DPV, Cranmer] took upon him the defence of that whole doctrine, that is, to refute and throw down first the corporal presence; secondly, the phantastical transubstantiation; thirdly, the idolatrous adoration; fourthly, the false error of the papists, that wicked men do eat the natural body of Christ; and lastly, the blasphemous sacrifice of the mass. Whereupon in conclusion he wrote five books for the public instruction of the church of England, which instruction yet to this day standeth, and is received in this church of England” (35).
