Theological Journals, Part 2: 8/26/2022
Mid-America Journal of Theology (Fall 2021): in “Should Effectual Calling and Regeneration be Distinguished,” Dr. Cornelius Venema further describes VanHoozer’s alleged advances on the subject. Sorry, not buying it although Venema is fair in characterizing VanHoozer. PRACTICAL: reminds on of the importance of the subject of internal and effectual calling.
Global Anglican (Spring 2022): in “John Owen on the Dangers of Biblicism,” Rev. Rich Duncan (CoE, Peterborough, UK) ends his treatment of Socinianism. Excellent retrieval. PRACTICAL: a good role model for other writers and he shows where Socininianism goes.
Global Anglican (Summer 2022): “LLF and Lambeth 2022:” Rev. Keith Sinclair outlines pros and cons of the LLF and percolating issues in the CoE, notably, Biblical authority. PRACTICAL: nice portal to hear of LC 2022 issues but a front-seat observer and participant.
Hedgehog Review (Summer 2022): in “Notes and Comments,” the Editor is baffle-gabbing about justice in politics with little-to-no practicality of note.
DTS (Summer 2022): gives a summary of the life of Lewis Sperry Chafer. PRACTICAL: reminds on of the finest schools teaching original languages, although dispensationalism, doctrine, worship and piety differ. Of note, Prof. W.H. Griffith Thomas, an Evangelical Anglican, was slated to teach in fall 1924, but passed in summer of 1924.
“The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 1:” in “The Mosaic Authorship of the Pentateuch,” Professor George Frederick Wright, DD, LLD, comments on the fallacy of the Darwinian hypothesis. We’ll stick with Prof. Roland Harrison and Prof. Willaim Albright’s mega-slapdown of the Graf-Cultists. To wit, the Graffies didn’t do the homework in ANE studies, but theorized ad nauseum and with unmitigable arrogance.
“The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 2:” in “Inspiration of the Bible—Definition, Extent and Proof,” Dr. James Gray (Moody Bible Institute and ordained minister in the Reformed Episcopal Church) begins defining “inspiration” by what it’s not—not genius, not elevated insights or illumination, etc. We’ll see where he goes. PRACTICAL: a good reminder of the battles fought by these men to retrieve, conserve, converse, and engage in the defense of the Canon.
“The Fundamentals—A Testimony to the Truth, Vol. 3: “The Biblical Conception of Sin,” the Rev. Dr. Thomas Whitelaw of Kilmarnock, Scotland gives further OT and NT definitions of sin. Universal yet expressed variously by all without exception. PRACTICAL: rethink this whole locus and do not osmotically pickup the theological pathogens of indifference from the collars.
