Cranmer Readings: 8/31/2022

Rev. Dr. Philip Edgcumbe Hughes, “Theology of English Reformers:” 5. Ministry, 159-188. The English Ordinal. The ministry is not sacerdotal after the Aaronic model of the OT, but has one High Priest who offered Himself as the one, sufficient, final and complete oblation and sacrifice. Prof. Hughes asserts the priesthood of all believers (165). Margot Johnson’s “Thomas Cranmer: 500th Commemoration of his Birth:” Prof. Gilley describes a plain preaching-box of an 1800 service with the triple-decker pulpit with a sacrament-church of 1900 with all the high bells, whistles, lights, reredos, vestments, and a priest with his back to the congregation. Yet, the BCP was common to both churches (168). Cf: Anglo-Sartorial-Lustings@CoolBros.com. Diarmaid McCulloch’s “Thomas Cranmer:” Prof. Mac describes Bonner’s aggressive attacks on Cranmer’s proxies and begins pressing the Six Articles (281). Arthur Innes: “Cranmer and the Reformation in England:” Art offers his effort on the bone-munchers view of Lutheranism (116). For scholarship, we’ll rely on Basil Hall’s historical retrieval. Leslie Williams’ “Emblem of Faith Untouched: A Short Life of Thomas Cranmer:” We hear of Cranmer’s loss in the debate over the King’s Book, despite his disputation with Henry. Henry thought JBFA would undermine English morality. Royal hermeneutics over Biblical exegesis. Cranmer caved on the King’s Book (once again) (77). Ayris, Paul, and David Selwyn, eds. “Thomas Cranmer: Churchman and Scholar:” 10. Cranmer, the Eucharist and the Foreign Divines in the Reign of Edward VI—Basil Hall, 217-260. Basil outlines the Eucharistic views of Luther, Melancthon, Bucer and Calvin (218) with a note that Calvin viewed Zwingli’s views as pernicious. Ridley, Jaspar. “Thomas Cranmer:” 15. The Crisis of 1543. Cranmer has appointed two examiners of the Prebendaries’ Plot, Cox and Hussey. But, they are allegedly secret Papists and didn’t dig very deeply. Morice smells the plot and works to gets Thomas Legh—who energetically and efficaciously investigates, finding incriminatory papers and communications of the plot to take down Cranmer. The success of exposure was due to Leigh, Butts, Denny and Morice but not Cranmer (242). The deep state operated back then too.
