Article X—Of
Free-Will.
The condition of Man after the fall of Adam is such, that he cannot turn and
prepare himself by his own natural strength and good works, to faith, and
calling upon God: wherefore we have no power to do good works pleasant and
acceptable to God, without the grace of God by Christ preventing us, that we
may have a good will, and working with us, when we have that good will.
Bishop John Hooper: “God requireth an inward and
perfect obedience unto the will of God; the which this nature of man, corrupted
by original sin cannot perform, as St. Paul proveth manifestly in the seventh
and eighth chapter to the Romans. There remaineth in man as long as he
liveth ignorance and blindness, that he knoweth not God nor his law as he ought
to do, but rebelleth by contumacy against God. ... Likewise the will as froward
and perverse, that it willeth nothing of God nor of his law.” – On the Use of
the Law.
