Evening Prayer (1662 Book of Common Prayer)

John Calvin on the Psalms. Keil & Delitzsch on Joshua. Matthew Henry on Jude. Dr. Robert Reymond on Systematic Theology. Dr. Philip Schaff on the Swiss Reformation, namely, Ulrich Zwingli. Westminster Shorter Catechism, 101-107. Calvin on Psalm 4, we are exhorted to withdraw from the daily affairs at night...and to commune with God in the quiet of self-reflection, meditation, repentance, saving faith and strengthening. King David exhorts his enemies to do the same thing. Prof. Keil on Joshua 2 expatiates on Rahab's dissimulation with the King of Jericho, thus sparing God's spies from detection. He notes that Calvin and Augustine with him, to wit, that Rahab's dissimulation was a sin. As a combat veteran, a disagreement is registered. Disinformation and camouflage is required in war. On another instance, he says the same about the Hebrew midwives dissimulating with Pharoah's murderous baby-killing policy. We can argue with Prof. Keil elsewhere, but note even our favored Professors err and stray like the rest of us. Matthew Henry on Jude zeroes in positively on matters of helping the brothers and sisters, a notable change in direction and tone after he tossed grenades down the chimneys of hypocrites. Prof. Robert Reymond on systematic theology begins to shovel in the dirt after burying Barth in his grave. Simply put, but with out expansion--to wit, God in His infallible knowledge knows every syllable and language ever spoke and every word in every dictionary. God talks to us in syllables and with words accommodated to our levels. Barth says "No." We say "Yes" and we'll allow Prof. Reymond to finish shoveling the dirt on the grave. Tomorrow, Archbishop Bill Temple of Canterbury will be taken to the outhouse to get some more butt-hurt from Prof. Reymond. Some of these theologians! SMH! From Prof. Philip Schaff on Zwingli, we hear of Zwingli's expository ministry at Grossmunster, Zurich beginning on 1 Jan 1519. Over the next four years, he covers every NT book minus Revelation. During the weekday lectures in the Cathedral, he worked and reworked the Psalms. He was working the Hebrew, Greek and Latin languages (about which God has infinite knowledge compared to us students of those languages). God and God's Word brought regeneration, nurture, and vigor to Zurich. And then, there's 2021 in the TEC. Shaking my head at that too. Good LORD, deliver us from contempt of Thy Word, we beseech Thee! Amen. The WSC does what it always does, keeps the ship in the right lane in the channel (am an old, retired USN man and staying in the channel matters).
