Theological Journals, Part 2

Reformed Presbyterian Theological Journal (1837): the Editor continues his biography and eulogy of Rev. John Cannon, faithful RPCNA minister. Protestant Reformed Theological Journal 55,1 (Fall, 2021): in “Introduction to Church Holidays from Gereformeerd Kerkrecht,” Peter Vander Schaa continues discussing festival days in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and the Scottish traditions. Of note, nothing is mentioned about England and the BCP. Reformed Theological Journal (Sept 2020), in “Christian Platonism” and Christological Interpretation: A Response to Craig A. Carter, Interpreting Scripture with the Great Tradition,” Daniel J. Treier of Wheaton College is wonking out on ontology and metaphysics. Where is this going? Southwestern Theological Journal (Fall 2021), in “THE USE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT IN THE EPISTLE TO THE JAMES, 1-2 PETER AND JUDE,” Dr. Mark Taylor begins his assessment of the OT in Peter’s epistles. Concordia Theological Journal (January 2022), in “Hermann Sasse’s View of the Office of the Ministry Up to World War II,” the LCMS’s President, Matthew C. Harrison, continues to put this scribe to sleep. Princeton Theological Review (Vol.22, No.1, Spring 2007): “Cyril, Nestorius, and Schleiermacher on the Relation between the Incarnation and the Atonement:” Nathan Hieb is doing an excellent job of reviewing Cyril’s Chalcedonian Christology in the Athanasian tradition, including divine impassiblity of Christ’s divine nature and yet mediating suffering through the human nature. Shall we ask Schleiermacher? Themelios (Dec 2021): in “Old Testament Hope: Psalm 2, the Psalter, and the Anointed One:” Dr S. D. Ellison exquisitely discussing the Messianic hopes in the Psalter. Of course, for the decadents ones, predictive prophecy is impossible, we would add. Journal of Theological Studies (Vol. 9, 1908): “Cephas and Christ” the Editor exposits Malachi’s prediction of one coming in the spirit of Elijah. Hedgehog Review (Sprin 2017): in the “Strange Persistence of Guilt,” Dr. Wilfred M. McClay comments on the utter irony of Soviets sitting in the war crimes tribunals of Nurenburg when they had committed they same crimes as the Nazis. Seed and Harvest (Winter 2021, Trinity Episcopal School of Ministry): comments on the “certificate of evangelism” and a partnership with the Salvation Army. Reformed Faith and Practice (May 2022): in “Evangelicalism After Fosdick: Macartney as a Case Study,” Dr. John Muether of Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando, gives more history on Dr. MacCartney and the utter failure of the 1925 GA to deal with the Auburn Affirmation of 1924. After that, it was over. Princeton Seminary was recognized as the problematic elephant in the room, the academic antagonists to the indifferentists. Hence, the move to reshuffle the Board of Directors to exclude the Confessionalists by including decadent ones, indifferentists and pacifists (the Erdman tribe). MacCartney resigned from PTS's Board and joined the board of the newly founded Westminster Seminary. Those battles continue to this day. “Theologians You Should Know: Apostolic Fathers to the 21st Century,” Dr. Michael Reeves discusses Clement of Rome and his epistle. Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies (5.2: 2020): “An Introduction to Catholicity: An Editorial Preface to this Special Issue: Ryan A. Brandt and Matthew Emerson notes that “catholicity” will be addressed by insiders from varying traditions.
