Canon Richard Dixon's "History of the Church of England, Vol. 3," 60ff.

PRAYER BOOK REBELLION IN THE SOUTHWEST. Dr. Cranmer’s very, very severe answer to the Devonshire militants. So much for the gentle and timid Churchman avoiding conflict. Canon gives an excerpt from Dr. Cranmer's brusque, but just chastisement, written more be rebellious priests than commoners. Carew's reception on his return from the West. Paget remonstrates (again) with the Protector on his weakness. The siege of Exeter for 5 weeks. Rising in Berkshire and Oxfordshire, which was partly caused by religion. Irresistible advance of Grey into those parts. His terrible severities. Movements of Russell in the West. His victory at Fenington Bridge. He is joined by Grey: and advances to relieve Exeter. Exeter relieved. A priest is summarily hanged from his church, St. Mary's, adjacent to the Cathedral, but pulled down in the 1970s. Meanwhile, things are heating up at Oxford over Dr. Vermigli's views. He fights from Lambeth Palace, the dinner companion of Dr. Cranmer.
